OXFORD, Ohio - Dominating performances last week by senior goalie Connor Knapp and junior guard Courtney Osborn have earned them Miami Male and Female Athlete of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 2-8.
Knapp (York, N.Y.) backstopped the Miami hockey team to a sweep at No. 15 Michigan State, allowing just one goal in two games for a 0.49 goals-against average while stopping 53 of 54 shots for a .981 save percentage. Friday, he allowed his only goal of the weekend while making 33 saves, his second-most this season, as Miami won in overtime. Of his 33 saves, 11 came on Spartan power plays, but he denied all five of MSU's man advantages. Saturday he pitched his first shutout of the year and ninth of his career by stopping all 20 shots that came his way, 11 of which came on eight Spartan power plays but again he denied all eight man advantages. He earned third star in Saturday's victory and now has 36 career wins, which moved him into a tie for fifth in school history.
Knapp also earned CCHA Goaltender of the Week and Inside College Hockey (INCH) National Player of the Week for his efforts. This is his first time winning Miami Male Athlete of the Week this year.
Osborn (Fishers, Ind.) had perhaps the greatest week for an individual player in Miami women's basketball history. She finished with a 30.3 points per game average in three games, all victories. In the middle game of Miami's three games on the week, Osborn put up a school- and MAC-record 48-point performance in an overtime win at Akron in the MAC opener on Wednesday. It was the most points scored by any NCAA Division I women's basketball player in nearly two years. During the game she was 14-for-25 from the field and 6-for-8 from behind the arc while hitting 14-of-17 free throws. In her other games this week, Osborn was also solid, leading the RedHawks with 20 points in a victory over Robert Morris on Monday. She also had six rebounds, three steals and five assists in the contest. She followed up the 48-point performance on Saturday with 23 points in a victory over Buffalo. She had six assists, five rebounds and three steals in that one. For the week Osborn was 27-for-59 from the field, including an incredible 12-for-22 (54.5 percent) from behind the arc, and was 25-of-29 from the charity stripe. She averaged 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game on the week and also had 2.3 steals per game.
Osborn also garnered Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week after her strong showing last week, winning the honor for the third time this season. She has now been named Miami Female Athlete of the Week four times this year.
Knapp and the RedHawks return to the ice this weekend as they travel to the Upper Peninsula to face No. 19 Lake Superior State Friday (7:35 p.m.) and Saturday (7:05 p.m.). Osborn leads Miami back on the court in a pair of MAC games this week, hosting Kent State Wednesday at 7 p.m. before traveling to Athens, Ohio to face the rival Ohio Bobcats Sunday at 2 p.m.
