OXFORD, Ohio - With each receiving accolades from their respective conferences, senior sprinter Rachael Clay and junior forward Reilly Smith have also been named Miami's Female and Male Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 16-22.
Clay (Rossford, Ohio) had a strong showing at the Gladstein Invitational, hosted by Indiana University, Friday and Saturday. On Friday, she won the 400m dash invitational final in a personal-best 55.49, the second-best time in school history and third-best in the MAC this year (43rd nationally). She won the invite-only race in a field of 15, improving her previous best time by over half a second while winning the race by over half a second as well. Saturday, Clay helped Miami shatter the school record in the 4x400m relay, running the third leg to help the team finish in 3:43.97, topping the previous record, which she also helped set last year, by over a second. The RedHawks won the 21-team race as well while the time is nearly three seconds faster than any other team in the MAC and ranks 38th nationally.
Clay also earned Mid-American Conference Female Track Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for her efforts with both honors being the first of her career.
Smith (Mimico, Ont.) scored four goals, including both game-winning goals in a sweep of No. 8 Western Michigan, while posting a +4 rating last weekend. Friday, he recorded his second hat trick of the season and third of his career as he scored all three of Miami's goals in a 3-1 win. The game-winner came short-handed in the second period, his first short-handed goal of the year. It was his fourth multi-goal game this year and 13th of his career. He was +3 for the game. On Saturday, Smith scored Miami's first goal in the first period, which was also the game-winner in a 4-0 win over WMU. He now leads the CCHA with 18 goals on the year, which ties for third in the country. Smith has seven game-winning goals this year which leads the NCAA by himself. The seven game-winners also tie for second in Miami single-season history, one shy of tying the record. With goals in both games, he is now riding a season-long five-game point streak.
Smith was also named CCHA Player of the Week Monday and National Player of the Week by Inside College Hockey (INCH) on Tuesday. He has won CCHA Player of the Week and has been Miami Male Athlete of the Week three times each this season.
Clay and the women's track and field team are back in action Friday and Saturday at the Rod McCravy Memorial, hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Smith leads the 17th-ranked Miami hockey team back on the ice Friday and Saturday when the RedHawks host No. 19 Northern Michigan at Steve Cady Arena.
