OXFORD, Ohio - Leading their respective teams to key victories last week, senior forward Julian Mavunga and junior swimmer Bekka Westrick are Miami’s Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 30 to Feb. 5.
Mavunga (Indianapolis, Ind.) was a catalyst in the RedHawks’ wins over the top two MAC West Division teams last week. He put together an impressive stat line against Eastern Michigan Wednesday that earned him ESPN Stats & Info Player of the Night distinction. Mavunga tallied 19 points and career highs of 19 rebounds and eight assists in a 62-57 overtime win against the Eagles, in which he played all 45 minutes. Saturday, he notched another double-double in a 59-53 win at Ball State, the RedHawks’ first road win in MAC play this year. Mavunga totaled 10 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and handed out five assists in the victory while again playing the entire game (40 minutes). He now has four straight double-doubles and averaged 14.5 ppg, 14.5 rpg and 6.5 apg in the two games. He also shot 40 percent from the field and 77.3 percent from the free throw line for the week.
Mavunga was also named MAC East Division Player of the Week for his efforts, his first time winning the award this year and the third of his career. He has now won Miami Male Athlete of the Week four times this season.
Westrick (Fairfield, Ohio) led Miami to a dual meet victory over rival Ohio on Saturday, 160-140, in the RedHawks’ final dual meet of the season. She won both of her individual races and also won a pair of relays, helping Miami earn 40 of its 160 points. She won the 50 freestyle in 23.48 and captured the 100 free in 51.49, earning a combined 18 points in the two races. Westrick also swam the third leg on Miami’s winning 200-yard medley relay team that clocked 1:42.49 while she swam her butterfly leg in 24.18. She finished the meet by swimming the lead leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team that touched in 3:26.52 while posting a split of 24.68.
Westrick has now won Miami Female Athlete of the Week three times this season.
Mavunga leads the men’s basketball team back into action Wednesday at Northern Illinois before hosting Central Michigan at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday as part of a basketball doubleheader. Westrick and the women’s swimming team are off until the MAC Championships Feb. 22-25.
