OXFORD, Ohio - For the second time this year, the collegiate synchronized skating team is the Miami Female Athletes of the Week after winning a national championship while sophomore catcher John Crummy is Miami's Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Feb. 27 to March 4 after leading baseball to an upset win. The award is the first of Crummy's career.

Miami's collegiate synchronized skating team

Behind a score of 87.80, Miami's collegiate synchronized skating team capped off an undefeated season by winning their eighth consecutive national crown on Saturday evening at the 2012 U.S. National Championships in Worcester, Mass. The RedHawks, who had already set the record for most consecutive national crowns at any level of synchronized skating last season, tied figure skater Michelle Kwan's record of eight-straight national titles. This is the 14th national title for the collegiate team, with their string of consecutive titles dating back to the 2004-05 season. The RedHawks topped their nearest competitor in the 13-team field by 3.51 points.

John Crummy

Crummy (Butler, Pa.) played in all three games at 16th-ranked Ole Miss over the weekend, starting the first two. He batted .455 (5-for-11) with three RBIs and also scored a run in the series against the Rebels. He notched his first career multi-hit game on Friday night, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs, leading the RedHawks to a 9-8 upset of Ole Miss - Miami's first win over a ranked team since 2007. He added a hit in three at-bats both Saturday and Sunday as well after entering the weekend with only one career hit (last year). Crummy was perfect on all 13 fielding chances as well.

The collegiate synchronized skating team is finished with its competition schedule for the year but will next perform during the Miami University Ice Show April 20-21. Crummy and the rest of the baseball team begin play in Florida Tuesday against Villanova as part of the Snowbird Classic. The RedHawks play Miami (Fla.), Sacred Heart, Seton Hall and Pittsburgh while in Florida this week as well.
