OXFORD, Ohio - Strong performances by senior outfielder Bryce Redeker and senior pitcher Jessica Simpson have earned them Miami Male and Female Athlete of the Week, respectively, for the week of March 12-18. This is the first honor for each athlete this year.
Redeker (Watseka, Ill.) helped Miami run its winning streak to seven games before Sunday’s loss to Morehead State. He led the RedHawks to a 4-1 record during the week, raising his season average from .212 to .300 by hitting .545 (10-for-18) with one home run and seven RBIs in five games. He had multiple hits in four of the five games with a high of three vs. Canisius on March 13. Redeker drove in a pair of runs three times while five of his hits went for extra bases (three doubles, a triple and a home run), giving him a 1.000 slugging percentage on the week. With two walks and two hit-by-pitches, he posted a .636 on-base percentage and also stole a base.
Simpson (North Canton, Ohio) was perfect this week, as she threw her first career perfect game against Dayton on Sunday in an 8-0 six-inning win. She struck out 10 of the 18 batters she faced, getting four groundouts and four fly outs for the other eight outs. Only one ball left the infield during the contest. Simpson earned three wins on the week as the RedHawks won their home invitational. Playing Dayton on Friday, she pitched four innings of Miami’s 9-0, five-inning win. She allowed only three hits while striking out seven. Pitching in relief of a 0-0 game against Loyola (Ill.) on Saturday, Simpson allowed only one hit in 2.2 innings as the RedHawks eventually took a 1-0 victory. Simpson didn’t allow a single run and only four hits in 12.2 innings pitched at the tournament. She stuck out 17. Teams only batted .098 against her in the three games.
Simpson was named MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week for her efforts, as well.
Redeker and the baseball team return to action with a pair of mid-week games against rival Xavier, playing in Cincinnati Tuesday before hosting the Musketeers Wednesday at 6 p.m. Simpson and the softball team are back on the field Thursday with a doubleheader at Butler.
