OXFORD, Ohio - After leading each of their teams to victories over the weekend, sophomore sprinter Jahquil Hargrove and senior pitcher Jessica Simpson are Miami’s Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 2-8.
Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) had a stellar meet for the RedHawks at their own Miami Invitational Saturday, as he totaled 24 points in three events for Miami to lead them to the team title. He was the runner-up in the 400m dash in a field of 20 in a personal-best 47.57, just four-hundredths of a second behind the race’s winner, while his time is tops in the MAC this year and ranks 76th nationally. Hargrove ran the third leg on Miami’s 4x400m relay team, which won the race in a season-best time of 3:14.70, beating out runner-up Kent State by nearly two seconds. Hargrove also ran the 200m dash and placed third in a personal-best 22.07 in a field of 22 while his time ranks seventh in the MAC this year.
The honor is the first of Hargrove’s career.
Simpson (North Canton, Ohio) was the star of the week as the RedHawks swept all four games against Akron and Ohio. She earned three victories to give her 85 for her career, which ties her for the MAC record in all-time career victories. Simpson allowed only three earned runs in 24.1 innings pitched for an ERA of 0.86. She struck out 31 batters, an average of 1.3 per inning. Simpson threw four-hit shutouts vs. Akron on Friday and Ohio on Saturday for her first two victories. After the RedHawks fell behind 3-0 in the first inning against the Bobcats on Sunday, she entered in relief and proceeded to battle Ohio for the next 10.1 innings to help lead the RedHawks to a marathon victory in 11 innings. Opponents only hit .202 against her during the weekend.
Simpson was also named MAC East Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season and 13th time in her career for her efforts while she has now been tabbed Miami Female Athlete of the Week twice (March 12-18).
Hargrove and the rest of the men’s track and field team are back in action this weekend at the Jesse Owens Classic, hosted by Ohio State April 13-14, while Simpson and the softball team return to the field Thursday for a doubleheader at Morehead State before hosting Ball State Saturday and Sunday.
