OXFORD, Ohio - After each posted one of the top times in school history on the track last weekend, senior sprinter Rachael Clay and junior distance runner Jarrod Eick are Miami’s Female and Male Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 9-15.
Clay (Rossford, Ohio) had a strong showing at the Jesse Owens Classic Saturday despite cold and rainy conditions, clocking a personal-best 400m dash time of 54.43, which moves her into second in school history in the event, less than a second behind the record holder (53.58). She finished sixth out of 28 in the race but was fourth among collegiate runners, which included a pair of Big Ten athletes. Clay shaved over a full second off her previous-best time, which ranked her eighth all-time at Miami (55.77). The 54.43 is the fourth-fastest time ever run at Miami in the 400m, ranks fourth in the MAC this year and ranks 77th nationally.
The honor is the second for Clay this year, also winning Miami Female Athlete of the Week during indoor season for the week of Jan. 16-22.
Eick (Hartville, Ohio) also ran a tough race Friday at the Jesse Owens Classic, as he clocked a personal-best 3:46.32 in the 1500m, which earned him sixth out of 41 runners in the race. He was fourth among collegiate finishers, including two Big Ten runners in front of him and several behind him, and was less than a second behind the winner of the race. His time moves him into sixth in school history in the 1500m, improving his previous-best time by over two seconds, as he was eighth in school history. Eick now ranks second in the MAC this year and 46th nationally in the 1500m.
The honor is the third for Eick this season as he won his first two Miami Male Athletes of the Week back in September during cross country season.
Both Clay and Eick are back on the track this weekend and will be running at home as the RedHawks host the All-Ohio Championships Friday and Saturday at George Rider Track.
