OXFORD, Ohio - Leading each of their teams to respective wins from the mound during the week, senior pitcher Jessica Simpson and sophomore hurler Charles Zubrod have been tabbed Miami’s Female and Male Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of April 23-29.
Simpson (North Canton, Ohio) continued to put up stellar numbers as she closes in on the end of her collegiate career. She earned victories in all four games last weekend, extending her MAC career wins record to 92. She threw the third no-hitter of her career and second of the season in a 4-0 win over Buffalo on Friday. She entered in relief during the last 3.1 innings of the second game of the doubleheader and allowed only one hit as Miami came from behind to beat the Bulls in that game as well. Simpson allowed only one run on four hits in a win over Kent State on Saturday. The run ended a streak of 46.1 innings that she hadn’t allowed an earned run. She then earned her fourth victory of the weekend on Sunday when she gave up two runs on four hits as Miami defeated the Golden Flashes once again. Simpson allowed only nine hits in 24.1 innings pitched during the week, a batting average against of .108. She gave up only two walks and struck out an impressive 34 in her four games.
Simpson has now earned Miami Female Athlete of the Week four times this year, including three times in the last four weeks with this week marking the second consecutive week she’s claimed the honor.
Zubrod (Winnetka, Ill.) earned one of Miami’s wins last week with a strong start at Big Ten foe Indiana on Tuesday. He scattered four hits in 7.0 innings against the Hoosiers and allowed four runs, but only one was earned. He also walked two and struck out two while Indiana batted just .148 against him. Zubrod totaled 104 pitches on the day. On the year, Zubrod leads Miami starting pitchers with a 3.04 earned run average while starting six games and making 11 appearances. The win Tuesday was just his second of the year while he has 24 strikeouts in 47.1 innings of work.
The honor is the first Miami Male Athlete of the Week of Zubrod’s career.
Both Simpson and Zubrod are back in action this weekend as softball hosts Bowling Green in a doubleheader Friday while baseball welcomes Akron for a weekend series.
