OXFORD, Ohio - After each won a championship last weekend, sophomore sprinter Jahquil Hargrove and senior pitcher Jessica Simpson have earned Miami Male and Female Athlete of the Week, respectively, for the week of May 7-13. Both student-athletes won the honor last week as well. Simpson has now garnered Miami Female Athlete of the Week four straight weeks and six times this year while Hargrove has now claimed Male Athlete of the Week three times on the season.

Jahquil Hargrove

Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) captured the Mid-American Conference title in the 400m dash Saturday at the MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. He earned First-Team All-MAC honors and was named the men’s Outstanding Track Performer at the meet, also taking third in the 200m dash and helping Miami take third in the 4x400m relay. He and freshman JaShawn Combs were the first RedHawks to win a MAC crown since 2008.

Hargrove won the 400m dash in a school-record time of 46.62, breaking Sam Miranda’s mark of 46.67 set in 1988. His time ranks 58th nationally this year and will qualify him for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Jacksonville, Fla. May 24-26. In the 200m dash final, he clocked 21.47, while recording a personal-best time of 21.35 in the prelims Friday, which is eighth in school history. He earned 16 points for Miami in his two sprints and also helped the ‘Hawks earn another six points in the relay.

Jessica Simpson

Simpson (North Canton, Ohio) led Miami to its third MAC Tournament Championship in school history last week. She pitched 42 innings in just over 46 hours, including leading the RedHawks to three straight victories in roughly eight hours on Saturday. For the tournament, Simpson finished 5-1 with a 0.50 ERA and 45 strikeouts in six games while allowing only three earned runs. For her efforts she was named the MAC Tournament MVP for the second time in her career and also to the All-Tournament Team.

After suffering a tough luck, 1-0, loss to Central Michigan on Thursday where she allowed only three hits, she rebounded to defeat Kent State, 5-1, and Ball State, 4-2, on Friday. Simpson held the Cardinals, the top-hitting team in the MAC, to only two runs on five hits, while striking out 10. On Saturday, she gave up only one unearned run to Western Michigan before shutting out Central Michigan for 14 straight innings on 10 total hits to secure Miami the championship.

Simpson hit several milestones in the middle game of Saturday’s tripleheader against Central Michigan. In that game she recorded her 1,000th career strikeout and became the first MAC pitcher to win her 100th career game. It was also her 44th career shutout, which set a MAC record.

Hargrove returns to the track Thursday, May 24 at 7:20 p.m. in the NCAA East First Round of the 400m dash in Jacksonville, Fla. Simpson is back in the circle Friday as the RedHawks face seventh-seeded Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn.
