OXFORD, Ohio - Although competing in different sports, the battery of freshman catcher Max Andresen and senior pitcher Jessica Simpson compose Miami’s Athletes of the Week as Andresen is the Male Athlete of the Week and Simpson the Female Athlete of the Week for the week of May 14-20. Simpson has now garnered Miami Female Athlete of the Week five straight weeks and seven times this year while Andresen’s honor is the first of the season.

Max Andresen

Andresen (Granger, Ind.) helped Miami’s baseball team to a series win at rival Ohio last weekend in the final regular-season series, ensuring the RedHawks a berth in the 2012 MAC Tournament. He batted .500 with six hits in 12 at-bats while two of his hits went for extra bases (both doubles). He tied a career high with three hits in the win Thursday, driving in a pair of runs during a decisive three-run sixth inning. On Friday, Andresen had a pair of hits and an RBI before belting a two-run double in the first inning in the finale Saturday, giving Miami a lead it would not relinquish. He walked once and scored once during the weekend while going a perfect 10-for-10 on fielding chances.

Jessica Simpson

Simpson (North Canton, Ohio) led the RedHawk softball team to one of the biggest upsets in program history Friday, as she shut out fifth-ranked and No. 7 national seed Tennessee in the opening round of the Knoxville Regional of the NCAA Tournament. She pitched all seven innings, allowing just five hits (all singles) and one walk while fanning six. Simpson did not allow more than one baserunner in an inning and no Lady Vol advanced past second base all game as the ‘Hawks won, 1-0, for just the second NCAA Tournament win in school history. She pitched another 12.1 innings on Saturday in two games before Miami was eliminated.

Andresen and the RedHawks are back in action Wednesday as they open MAC Tournament play against Toledo at 4 p.m. in Avon, Ohio. Simpson’s historic career came to a close at the NCAA Tournament over the weekend.
