OXFORD, Ohio - As Miami Athletics' 2011-12 season winds down, senior pitcher Shawn Marquardt and sophomore javelin thrower Tori Paterra have been named Miami's final Male and Female Athletes of the Week, respectively, for their outstanding postseason performances during the week of May 21-27. The honor is the first for each this season.
Marquardt (Carmel, Ind.) pitched a complete-game shutout Wednesday in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament in Avon, Ohio, leading the RedHawks to a 5-0 win over second-seeded Toledo. The left-hander allowed just five hits (three singles, two doubles) and retired 18 straight Rockets after a leadoff single in the third inning. He fanned two while walking none and had no hit batsmen. Marquardt threw 105 pitches and faced just four over the minimum. Toledo batted a mere .167 against him in the game. It was his fourth complete game of the season, including second against Toledo.
Paterra (Elizabeth, Pa.) qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships last Thursday, as she placed fifth in the javelin at the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in Jacksonville, Fla. The top 12 finishers in the field of 48 advanced to the NCAA Championships. She fired a throw of 47.34m/155-3, which is the ninth-best in school history, all of which she owns. Paterra entered the first round seeded 10th in the region but improved five spots, clinching her second straight trip to the NCAA Championships. She was an Honorable Mention All-American last year.
Paterra will throw the javelin at the NCAA Championships Wednesday, June 6 at 3:40 p.m. ET in Des Moines, Iowa as Miami's final competing athlete this year. Marquardt's career ended when the RedHawks fell in the semifinals at the MAC Tournament.
