OXFORD, Ohio - With men’s sports competing for the first time in 2011-12 last weekend, junior cross country runner Jarrod Eick has been named the first Miami Male Athlete of the Week while field hockey sophomore goaltender Sarah Mueller is Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week.
Eick (Hartville, Ohio) won the season-opening Flyer 5K Challenge, hosted by the University of Dayton Saturday, to lead Miami to the team title for the eighth time in the last nine years at the meet. It was his second career individual victory and first not on Miami's home course. He finished the 5K race in 15:23.4, three seconds ahead of the runner-up (Dayton's Greg Roeth). Eick was first in a field of 149.
Mueller (Berlin, Germany) was flawless in two games over the weekend, not allowing a goal during the time she was in net. She played the first half on Friday against Monmouth, shutting out the Hawks while making three saves. She then played the entire game in Miami’s 3-0 win over Rutgers Sunday, making five saves for her ninth career shutout. For the weekend, Mueller played 105 minutes in net with a 1.000 save percentage and eight saves.
Men’s cross country returns to action this weekend, hosting the Miami Open on Saturday, Sep. 10 at 10 a.m. on Miami’s Western Campus. Field hockey hosts No. 7 Virginia on Friday, Sep. 9 at 3 p.m. before welcoming Michigan State on Sunday, Sep. 11.
