OXFORD, Ohio - For the second straight week, junior cross country runner Jarrod Eick has earned Miami Male Athlete of the Week while volleyball senior middle hitter Cassie Farrell has been chosen as the Female Athlete of the Week for week four.
Eick (Hartville, Ohio) won his second straight race of the season Saturday at the Miami Open, taking first place at Miami's only home meet for the second straight year. He finished in 25:39 in his first 8K race of the season, crossing the line 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Eick led Miami to the team title as well for the second straight race, ahead of three other teams, as he beat out a field of 44 runners. He received Miami Male Athlete of the Week last week after winning the Dayton Flyer 5K Challenge.
Farrell (Columbus, Ohio) was named to the Miami Best Western/Sycamore Inn Invitational All-Tournament Team after finishing as the team's leading hitter over the weekend with 40 kills. She set a career high with 20 kills in the win against Florida Gulf Coast on Friday. She was also the team's top hitter for the week at .417. Farrell provided points with her blocking game as well, tying for the team lead with seven total blocks on one solo and six assisted. Her production led Miami to a 3-0 weekend, also defeating Alabama A&M and Radford, and the Miami Best Western/Sycamore Inn Invitational title.
Men's cross country is off this week but returns to action Saturday, Sept. 24 at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La. with the race beginning at 10:45 a.m. ET. Volleyball hits the court tonight (Tuesday) for a mid-week matchup at Wright State at 7 p.m. before playing in the Tar Heel Classic Sept. 16 and 17.
