Miami Athletics enjoyed a pretty successful week of competition last week as it was Family Weekend on the Miami University campus last weekend.
A furious fourth quarter in which the Miami RedHawk football team (3-2; 2-0 MAC) scored 17 points resulted in a 27-21 triumph for the RedHawks over Kent State last Saturday at Yager Stadium. Junior defensive back Anthony Kokal intercepted a Kent State pass in the endzone in the waning minutes of the game to preserve the RedHawk win. (RECAP) Miami hits the road for two straight weeks, beginning this weekend as it clashes with local-rival Cincinnati in the 115th meeting in the Battle for the Victory Bell. Senior Rachel Patterson broke the course record and helped the women's cross country team win the All-Ohio Championship title last Friday on the campus of Cedarville University. Six RedHawks finished in the top 15, including Patterson, who won the overall individual title. Patterson finished first in 17:12.3, seven seconds ahead of her nearest competitor, while smashing the course record of 17:24 set at last year's meet by Ohio State's Sarah Foster. (RECAP) The RedHawks return to action in two weeks at the Penn State National Meet on Saturday, Oct. 16 in State College, Pa.
Placing five runners in the top 25, the men's cross country team captured the 8K All-Ohio Championship crown Friday afternoon on the campus of Cedarville University. The RedHawks have now won all three meets in 2010 that have been scored. Senior Robbie Fisher was the top RedHawk finisher, taking 12th in a personal-best time of 24:54.5. He was Miami's top finisher for the first time in his career, despite being knocked down early in the race in a field of 263 runners, but recovered to finish strong. Congratulations to Nathan Sutherland who was named the MAC Golfer of the Week last Thursday. (RELEASE) Sutherland tied for fourth place at one-over par to lead Miami to a sixth-place team finish at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic last Tuesday. Field hockey (8-3; 3-1 MAC) posted a pair of shutouts last weekend and extended its win streak to three straight. Miami collected a 2-0 win at Ball State on Friday. Mary Hull assisted on both RedHawk goals. (RECAP) Miami returned home on Sunday and defeated Missouri State 3-0 in a dominant performance. Nearly the entire game was played with the RedHawks on the offensive attack with Miami taking 26 shots to Missouri State's three for the game. (RECAP) The RedHawks have a busy week, traveling to Ohio State for a 3 p.m. game on Thursday, Oct. 7, then playing at Michigan at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8, before resuming conference play at Central Michigan at noon Sunday, Oct. 10.
Hockey dominated Waterloo in exhibition action on Sunday afternoon, topping the Warriors, 6-0. The RedHawks were led by junior Alden Hirschfeld's hat trick and shutout goaltending from both Connor Knapp and Cody Reichard, who split time in net. In a wild match that saw the RedHawk volleyball team (6-11; 1-3 MAC) overcome a nine-point deficit in the fourth set, Miami defeated Bowling Green 3-1 last Thursday in Bowling Green to pick up its first MAC win of the season. (RECAP) Despite taking a 2-1 lead in the match and putting forth a solid effort, the RedHawks dropped a five-set match to Northern Illinois University on Sunday afternoon at Millett Hall. The women's soccer team (9-3-1; 2-1-1 MAC) fell behind early and lost for the first time in Mid-American Conference play this season, as defending MAC Champion Central Michigan won 2-0 Friday evening. (RECAP) Miami tied Eastern Michigan, 1-1, Sunday afternoon in a double-overtime game that saw stellar goalkeeping performances by both teams with each keeper making double-digit saves. Eastern Michigan struck first with a goal at the 36:58 mark in the first half, but Miami tied it up off the head of senior Brooke Livingston with just under three minutes to play in regulation. Softball posted a pair of wins in exhibition action on Sunday, defeating Ohio Dominican in six innings, 9-4, and topping Kent State, 3-2. The team returns to the field hosting Ohio State in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10.
The women's tennis team continued its fall schedule this weekend when it traveled to South Bend, Ind. to compete in Notre Dame's Eck Classic. Freshmen Katie Thome and Hanna Furmanava both posted 3-1 records, highlighting Miami's participation at Notre Dame's Eck Tennis Classic. Thome won her first two matches to earn a berth in her flight's semifinal action before capturing the consolation final. (RECAP) Miami wraps up the fall schedule in two weeks when it participates in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Tournament.
Both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams held intrasquad exhibition meets last Saturday. The teams each open the season later this month the weekend of Oct. 22-23.
Synchronized skating announced its 2010-11 schedule last week with the RedHawks performing in Oxford at various events nine times this year. (RELEASE)
The synchronized skating and field hockey teams participated in InStep With the ComMUnity before last Saturday's football game. InStep is a partnership between the Farmer School of Business, Miami Intercollegiate Athletics and the Talawanda School District. Over 100 children and family members were supported with football tickets from MUCares and there was an Open House at the Farmer School of Business building followed by a short pep rally and a parade to Yager Stadium with Swoop to enjoy Tailgate Town and the football game.

The Red & White Club will host its next luncheon at City BBQ in West Chester, Ohio, on Tuesday, Oct. 5. Head Hockey Coach Enrico Blasi and Head Women's Basketball Coach Maria Fantanarosa are the featured speakers. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with the program beginning at noon. On Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. there will be an informal gathering with light refreshments at The Knolls of Oxford Clubhouse in the first RWC Social Hour. There is no charge or RSVP required for the event. In addition to head coaches Warren Mandrell (men's track & field/cross country) and Kelly Phillips (women's track & field/cross country), Athletics Director Brad Bates along with student-athletes Michael McCarty and Kelley Miller also will be a featured guests at this social.
