OXFORD, Ohio - A pair of juniors are Miami’s Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 24-30 as redshirt junior quarterback Zac Dysert is the Miami Male Athlete of the Week while junior swimmer Bekka Westrick is the Miami Female Athlete of the Week.
Dysert (Ada, Ohio) led Miami to a 41-13 win over Buffalo on Saturday, completing 80 percent of his passes (20-for-25), including his first 11 tosses, while throwing for 313 yards and a school-record-tying five touchdowns. He also tied a season-high mark of 39 rushing yards, giving him 352 total offensive yards. Dysert now has 7,166 career passing yards, ranking second in school history behind only Ben Roethlisberger (10,829). Dysert also became the 21st quarterback in Mid-American Conference history to top the 7,000-yard passing mark and currently sits in 20th place on the MAC’s all-time passing yardage chart.
Dysert garnered MAC East Division Offensive Player of the Week Monday for his efforts on Saturday, as well. He also earned Miami Male Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Oct. 3-9 after a strong performance in a win over Army.
Westrick (Fairfield, Ohio) led Miami to a 179-116 dual meet win over Akron on Saturday, winning two individual events and two relays. She took first in the 50 freestyle in 23.94 and the 100 freestyle in 52.44. On top of that, she swam the third leg on the RedHawks’ winning 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:47.25 while clocking a split of 25.35. In the 400 freestyle relay, Westrick swam the lead leg in 25:39 to help Miami win the relay by nearly five seconds over the Zips. Individually, she earned 18 points for the ‘Hawks while helping them pick up another 11 in the relays.
Dysert and the rest of the football team have a short turnaround, returning to the gridiron on Thursday, Nov. 3 to host Akron at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU. Westrick and the Miami women’s swimming team return to the pool Friday, Nov. 4 at Toledo.
