Captains' Corner is a weekly update from a captain or leader of one of the RedHawks' 19 teams that will run every other Thursday throughout the academic year. Today's update is from women's cross country's Jillian Dickman. Jill is a redshirt-junior from Madison, Ohio, who prepped at Madison High School. She is a double major in journalism and political science and is planning on graduating in May. Check back on Nov. 17 for the next edition of Captains' Corner.
After competing in our conference championship meet just last weekend, our team is looking to make a comeback at the NCAA Regional meet in Toledo. Despite a lot of anticipation and excitement, we were unable to come home with the victory at the MAC Championships. Although we were well prepared, the outcome did not show just how good we can be if we all work together during the race.
Every week the rotation of our top nine changes, and it makes the team dynamic very unique. If one of us doesn't have the best race, another is able to step up and fill her shoes. Having four freshmen in our top nine makes us a very young team. Despite this fact, it is amazing how much the upperclassmen learn from the younger gals on a day-to-day basis. They are excelling at a very fast rate and I have full confidence that they will continue to change our program in the future in a very positive way.
Although we were very disappointed with the results at our conference meet, there have also been many highlights throughout the season. We ran away with the team titles at the All-Ohio Championship race and the Miami Open. Maggie Bingham, another senior, was named Miami Female Athlete of the Week and earned a spot on the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team. Freshman Jess Hoover also earned this honor.
This season has been very special to me given the fact I am a senior. It is an honor to share my last year with these gals. I feel as if our team chemistry is stronger than it has ever been and in every mile lays another memory. We are looking forward to what we can accomplish together at Regionals as well as during our upcoming indoor and outdoor track seasons.
Love and Honor,
