OXFORD, Ohio - Leading each of their respective teams to a pair of close weekend wins, senior middle hitter Cassie Farrell and senior goalie Cody Reichard have been named Miami’s Female and Male Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Oct. 31-Nov. 6.
Farrell (Columbus, Ohio) led Miami’s volleyball team to a pair of five-set wins over Akron and Buffalo on the road last weekend, getting it done both offensively and defensively, as the RedHawks got back into the MAC Tournament race. She had 20 kills and only made five errors the entire weekend for a .341 hitting percentage. She had 11 kills in the five-set win over Akron, and continued her fine effort with nine more kills in the win over Buffalo on Saturday. In addition to contributing points offensively, Farrell totaled 15 blocks (two solo, 13 assisted) in two games. She set a career high with seven total blocks in win over Akron on Friday. Not to be outdone, she beat it the very next night with eight total blocks (two solo and six assisted) against Buffalo. She averaged 1.50 blocks per set for the week.
Farrell was named Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for her efforts, as well. This is her second time earning Miami Female Athlete of the Week this year, also capturing the honor for the week of Sept. 5-11.
Reichard (Celina, Ohio) was superb in net for Miami, leading the ‘Hawks to a sweep of Alaska, Miami's first sweep of the season, while starting both games. He allowed just one goal in each game over the weekend while combining to make 53 saves on 55 shots for a .964 save percentage on the weekend. He posted a 1.00 GAA while going 2-0-0. The one goal allowed Friday marked Miami's season low for goals allowed and then matched it again Saturday. Reichard’s 29 saves Friday were a season high. By allowing just two goals on the weekend, he dropped his GAA from 3.11 entering the weekend to 2.46 for the season and upped his save percentage from .870 to .902. He also helped Miami go 12-for-12 on the penalty kill over the weekend, denying all 18 shots that came on UAF's power plays.
Farrell and the RedHawks wrap up the regular season this weekend with home matches against Bowling Green Thursday at 7 p.m. and Western Michigan Saturday at 4 p.m. as Miami fights for a MAC Tournament berth. Reichard and the hockey team return to the ice this weekend as well with home games against No. 4/5 Michigan Friday at 7:35 p.m. and Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
