OXFORD, Ohio - Each winning the honor for the third time this year, senior middle hitter Cassie Farrell and sophomore wide receiver Nick Harwell are Miami’s Female and Male Athletes of the Week, respectively, for the week of Nov. 7-13.
Farrell (Columbus, Ohio) had a career weekend with a total of 32 kills in two wins for the RedHawks volleyball team, which clinched a MAC Tournament berth. She hit an incredible .509 with only four total errors in those two matches. Against Bowling Green on Thursday, she put down 10 kills and had a .474 hitting percentage. She really stepped things up in the win over Western Michigan on Saturday. She set a new career high with 22 kills and hit .528 for the match. Farrell continued her recent blocking tear over the weekend as well. She finished with seven blocks (two solo, five assisted) against the Falcons and six blocks (one solo, five assisted) against the Broncos. Farrell had 40 points during the weekend, an average of 4.44 points per set.
Farrell was also named Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for her efforts. She was named Miami Female Athlete of the Week last week as well when she won MAC East Defensive Player of the Week, and also earned Miami Female Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 5-11.
Harwell (Missouri City, Texas) set three records Wednesday in Miami’s game at Temple. He hauled in a school-record 15 receptions, surpassing the previous mark of 14, while totaling 229 receiving yards to eclipse his own school record of 219 yards that he set last year as a freshman. The game marked his seventh 100-yard receiving game of the season, which ties the school’s single-season record set by Martin Nance in 2003 and 2005. He now has nine career 100-yard receiving games, just six shy of Nance’s career record. Harwell also pulled in two touchdown catches on strikes of 29 yards and 14 yards and had a game-high 34-yard reception during the contest as well.
Harwell has also won Miami Male Athlete of the Week for the weeks of Sept. 12-18 and Sept. 26-Oct. 2.
Farrell and the rest of the volleyball team travel to Geneva, Ohio this weekend for the MAC Tournament. Seventh-seeded Miami opens with No. 2 seed Ohio at 7 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals. Harwell and the football team play their final home game of the season Wednesday when the RedHawks host Western Michigan at 8 p.m. at Yager Stadium.
