OXFORD, Ohio - For the second straight week, junior point guard Courtney Osborn has been named Miami Female Athlete of the Week while junior forward Reilly Smith has earned Miami Male Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Nov. 21-27.
Osborn (Fishers, Ind.) continued her hot start to the season by leading the women’s basketball team in scoring in both games last week. She scored 19 points in the win over her home state team of Indiana on Tuesday. She also led the RedHawks with 21 points, shooting 9-for-18, including three triples, against Stetson on Friday. She has shown a new-found rebounding prowess this season, as she recorded six rebounds against the Hoosiers and brought down another five against the Hatters. Osborn had five assists in each game, continuing an effective streak in which the point guard has had five assists in all five games the RedHawks have played this season. Against Indiana, she hit 11 of 14 free throws, and contributed a block and two steals. She finished with a pair of steals on the week, 10 assists and 11 boards while averaging 20.0 points per game.
Smith (Mimico, Ont.) led Miami’s hockey team to the Denver Cup Classic title with a three-goal weekend while being named Tournament MVP and landing on the All-Tournament Team. In Friday's 6-2 win over Providence, Smith scored Miami's second goal with just 4.5 seconds left in the first period. Saturday in a 4-2 win over No. 9/10 Denver he tallied two goals, including the game-winning goal in the second period. It was his third multi-goal game this year and 12th of his career. He now has 11 goals on the year, including six in his last five games, and ranks sixth nationally with 0.79 goals per game. He was +1 in each game for a +2 rating on the weekend and put 12 shots on goal between the two games.
Smith earned CCHA Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts as well. He also earned Miami Male Athlete of the Week honors the week of Oct. 10-16 after a five-point weekend at Colgate, which also earned him CCHA Player of the Week.
Osborn and the RedHawks return to the court Friday when they host Iona at Millett Hall for the annual “Class at the Court” game, which begins at 1:30 p.m. Smith and Miami stay on the road this weekend, taking on Northern Michigan Friday and Saturday with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m. both nights.
