RedHawks Split Doubleheader; Clinch No. 1 Seed in MAC Championship

KENT, OHIO – In game one of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon the RedHawks took down the Kent State University Golden Flashes 4-1 and clinched the No. 1 seed in the Mid-American Conference Championship Tournament. The RedHawks would lose the second game 10-8, despite a valiant comeback attempt. The split gives the Golden Flashes a final record of 18-31 overall and 13-14 in the MAC. After today's games Miami sits at 34-18 overall and 21-8 in MAC competition.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
  • The RedHawks got the scoring started in the top of the first inning when Allie Cummins scored on a pass ball to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Through the next three innings, neither team would score.
  • In the bottom of the fifth the Golden Flashes tied the game 1-1 on an RBI single.
  • The RedHawks took the lead back in the top of the seventh when Karli Spaid hit an RBI double that scored Maddi Banks. Riley Coyne then singled to score Spaid and Holly Blaska to make it a 4-1 game.
  • The Golden Flashes could not come back from this deficit and Miami took it 4-1.
 
NOTES:
  • Blaska and Spaid went 2-for-4 at the plate.
  • Brianna Pratt allowed only seven hits and two walks, while striking out 5.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
  • Spaid started the game off with a home run to grab an early 1-0 lead for the RedHawks.
  • In the bottom of the first the Golden Flashes tied it up 1-1 on an error.
  • Kate Kobayashi hit an RBI single in the top of the second, which scored Chloe Parks and took the lead back 2-1.
  • Kent State took the lead in the bottom of the second scoring three to make it 4-2 on two RBI singles and a sac fly.
  • In the top of the third Blaska scored on a double from Spaid to cut the deficit to 4-3.
  • Kobayashi scored in the top of the fourth when Banks hit a single, which tied the game 4-4.
  • In the bottom of the fourth Kent State put up six runs on three RBI singles, a fielder's choice and a wild pitch to make it 10-4.
  • Parks shortened the gap to 10-5 when she hit an RBI triple in the top of the fifth to score Reagan Bartholomew.
  • In the top of the seventh Jenna Golembiewski hit a three-run home run over the left field wall, also scoring Spaid and Bartholomew, to cut the deficit to 10-8, but the RedHawks ultimately could not come back.
 
NOTES:
  • Bartholomew went 2-for-2 at the plate.
  • Spaid went 3-for-4 and Banks went 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • Laurelai DePew recorded three strikeouts in her 2.2 innings in the circle.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks will return to the field next weekend in Oxford, Ohio to host the MAC Softball Championship Tournament, with games slated to begin on May 11.
