OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami track and field program’s trip to the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships was a rousing success for the team, but also for a pair of fresh faces collecting some hardware.
Freshmen Olivia Bechtel and Sean Torpy both earned MAC Freshman of the Year accolades for their performances in helping the RedHawks finish fifth in both meets at the conference championships. The award is given to the highest scoring freshman in both meets.
Bechtel earned Second-Team All-MAC recognition following her second-place finish in the 400m (54.40). She also scored with a fifth-place finish in the 200m (24.13) and ran a leg on MU’s sixth-place 4x400m relay team (3:44.86).
Torpy concluded his season by scoring individually in two events of his own, placing fourth in the 800m (1:53.28) and fifth in the 1500m (3:49.48). He also ran a leg in Miami’s third-place 4x400m relay (3:18.26).
The RedHawks conclude the team portion of their season with three combined MAC Freshmen of the Year and David Coffey took home the honor during the cross country season in the fall.
Miami will send a handful of competitors to the NCAA East Region Preliminary Meet that runs May 25-27 in Lexington, Ky. The Miami qualifiers will be announced this week.
