RedHawks Pick Up 4-2 Win Against Toledo in MAC Opener

OXFORD, Ohio--Three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning spurred Miami University's baseball team to a 4-2 win in its Mid-American Conference opener against the University of Toledo (6-7; 0-1 MAC) at McKie Field at Hayden Park on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader. The RedHawks improved to 9-9 on the season and 1-0 in MAC play with the win.
Senior centerfielder Brandon Hillier was hit by a pitch in the first at-bat in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore shortstop Jordan Petraitis singled to put runners on first and second, and a wild pitch moved Miami's runners to second and third. Sophomore leftfielder Chris Nadeau belted a two-run single and advanced to second base on the throw home. Sophomore designated hitter Eric Darlage doubled down the rightfield line to score Nadeau and give the RedHawks a 3-0 lead.
Toledo closed the gap in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs to pull within one run of the RedHawks. With two outs, Aaron Dudley singled to get on base and Jake Oester homered over the centerfield fence to put two runs on the board for the Rockets.
Neither team recorded a run until the bottom of the sixth inning. Nadeau was hit by a pitch and Darlage singled to right center to move Nadeau to third base. Senior first baseman Jeff Carroll singled to left field as Nadeau crossed the plate to give Miami a 4-2 lead. Both teams went scoreless over the remaining innings as Miami picked up the 4-2 win.
Nadeau went 1-for-3 from the plate, scoring two runs and recording two RBIs, while Darlage collected three hits in four at-bats and knocked in one run. Carroll went 2-for-4 and recorded an RBI for the RedHawks.
Junior pitcher John Ely threw 8.2 innings, striking out nine, to earn the win and move to 3-1 on the season, while freshman pitcher Reece Asbury picked up the save, pitching 0.1 innings in relief to preserve the win.
