COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame announced its 2018 class on Friday. One of the inductees is former Miami star John Powell (’58).
Powell, who was inducted into the Miami Hall of Fame in 1986, was a three-year letterwinner and ranks 29th all-time on the Red and White’s scoring list with 1,106 career points. He was named First-Team All-MAC in 1957 and Second-Team All-MAC in 1958. Powell helped lead Miami to MAC Championships and NCAA appearances in both of those seasons, and the Red and White earned their first ever NCAA Tournament victory, an 82-77 triumph over Pittsburgh, during his senior year. Powell’s 43 points at Marshall on Dec. 18, 1957, is still tied for the third best single-game scoring performance in school history.
Powell was previously inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in the team category in 2016 as the 1956-57 and 1957-58 teams (along with the 1958-59 team) were honored.
Powell is not the only one with Miami ties being inducted into the class of 2018. Cradle of Coaches member Sue Ramsey (’78) is being honored for her 20-year coaching career at Ashland University, where she was 367-217 and led the Eagles to NCAA Division II women’s basketball National Championship in 2013.
The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2018 will be honored at a dinner and ceremony in Columbus next May.
