On Tuesday morning, Ryan Smith, a senior with the Miami University football team was named to the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee.
Smith recorded career-highs in catches (31), yards (356) and touchdowns (5) last season, starting all 13 games for a RedHawk squad that finished as Mid-American Conference East Division co-Champions. The River Forest, Ill., native caught seven passes for 72 yards and a touchdown in Miami’s first bowl contest since 2010.
NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. A tight end by whom all others are measured, Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFLPA.
Smith and the RedHawks open the season on September 2 at Marshall.
