Dade City, Fla.- The Miami University golf team won the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play tournament following a 3-3 tiebreaker victory over third-seed Toledo. The RedHawks advanced to the championship round following defeats over Loyola and Ball State on Monday.
The Red and White secured the victory after an all-square final forced the teams into a tiebreaker. Miami defeated Toledo in most holes won. Senior Patrick Flavin continued his solid tournament with a 3&2 victory over Joe Bryce. After surrendering the first two holes to Bryce, Flavin bounced back, eliminating the need to play all eighteen. Redshirt junior Brian Ohr showed promise in a close match against Stephen Watts, coming away with a 4&3 victory. Both Flavin and Ohr went undefeated for the entirety of the tournament. Looking to bounce back after two tough losses yesterday, freshman Jack Herceg solidified a 2-Up win against Duncan McNeill, helping to lead the RedHawks to a victory.
Sophomore Cam Solomon had a tough fought match against Thomas Thurloway, leading to a 1-Up loss. After a back and forth battle, freshman Jack Mortell fell to Spencer Shoemaker in a 1-Up loss. Freshman Charlie Nikitas suffered his first loss of the tournament in a 4&2 match against Colin Joseph.
The RedHawks return to action March 3-4 at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona.
