RAVENNA, Ohio-Producing its best team finish of the season, a second-place showing at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate April 18-19, Miami University's golf team rounded out its regular season and takes a week off before the May 1-3 Mid-American Conference Championships.
Junior Mark Weghorst (Carmel, Ind./Brebeuf) paced the RedHawks at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate, shooting a seven-over par 217 to tie for 11th. Senior Eric Phipps (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) finished one stroke behind Weghorst to place 14th. Freshman Mike Calkin (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) notched a 10-over par 220 to tie for 20th place, while freshman Ryan Swelin (Sundre, Alberta/Sundre) was one stroke behind Calkin to tie for 24th place. Redshirt freshman Justin Kruse (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) rounded out the Miami five in a tie for 35th place at 15 over.
As a team, Miami finished 18 strokes behind tournament winner Kent State and two strokes ahead of third-place Wright State. Toledo's Brad Heaven and Kent State's Peter Laws tied for first at even par, but Heaven won the first-hole playoff to capture individual medalist honors.
