GRANVILLE, Ohio - RedHawk athletes were the first collegians on the results sheet in nine of the 11 events where Miami entered an individual participant at the Denison "Last Chance Meet" on Friday evening in Granville, Ohio.
Miami took the top three spots in the long jump, headed by junior Ceith Creekmur (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley), who leapt 21-10 1/2. Rookie Jeff Grimes (Waverly, Ohio/Waverly) won the shot put as the only thrower to pass 50 feet, reaching 50-1 3/4.
Junior Ryan Phillips (Germantown, Ohio/Valley View) came in second to an unattached athlete in the 55-meter dash, finishing in 6.63 seconds, while sophomore Tom Herrmann (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) earned a high jump win with a 6-6 leap.
Sophomore Jake Kuhner (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) led a foursome of Miami athletes in the pole vault, reaching a height of 15-6. Two events later, senior Chris Swisher (Milan, Ind./Milan) won the first of two events, taking the 1500 meters in 3:54.30 by a margin of 10 seconds. He later took the 800 meters in 1:55.07.
Sophomore Chris Corgiat (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) was the first collegian across the line in the 400 meters, finishing second in 51.16, while junior Michael Watts (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) won the 200 meters in 22.88 for Miami's final individual win.
The team is now off from competition until the final weekend in March, when it travels to the UC Irvine Invitational.
