OXFORD, Ohio - Wrapping up the regular season, the Miami University men's and women's track and field teams compete Friday at the Billy Hayes Invitational, held at Indiana University's Haugh Track & Field Complex. The meet serves as a final tune-up before next week's Mid-American Conference Championships.

The meet gets underway at 2 p.m. with the women's hammer throw and men's javelin while the first races on the track are the men's 110m hurdles prelims at 3 p.m. followed by the women's 100m hurdles prelims at 3:15 p.m. The final field events to commence are the men's discus and women's shot put at 8:15 p.m. while the meet concludes with the 4x400m relays at 8:55 p.m. A complete schedule can be found here.

In addition to the host Hoosiers, whose men's team is No. 7 in the country, the meet will feature several area teams such as Purdue, Kentucky, Illinois State, whose women's team is No. 14 nationally, Indiana State, IPFW (women only), Western Kentucky, Lindenwood, SIU Edwardsville and several Division II and III schools.

Last Saturday, Miami held the RedHawk Invitational for its final home meet of the year and the men put on a show, winning six individual events, including three throws. Senior Adam Ruiz (Mascoutah, Ill.) highlighted the meet by winning the hammer throw with a heave of 57.98m/190-3 that ranks him fifth in school history while also taking second in the discus. Classmate Nathan Hoch (Logan, Ohio) was first in the discus while sophomore Taylor Celestin (Mason, Ohio) took first in the javelin. Fellow sophomore Matt Gambill (Dover, N.H.) captured the high jump while classmate Jahquil Hargrove (Norristown, Pa.) crossed first in the 200m dash and freshman Skyler Coburn (La Porte, Ind.) won the 400m dash.

On the women's side, freshman Adaora Anunike (Galena, Ohio) claimed first in the shot put at the RedHawk Invite with a heave that moved her into Miami's all-time top 10 while sophomore Erin Riley (Avon Lake, Ohio) was Miami's only other winner in the 800m. Several RedHawks rested last weekend while three competed at the famed Drake Relays, where senior Kelley Miller (Dublin, Ohio) smashed her own school record in the 1500m by over a second, clocking 4:23.64 to finish seventh. Last Friday, senior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) also performed well at Drake, taking 15th in the shot put with the fourth-best throw in school history, all of which she owns.

At last year's Billy Hayes Invitational, Michael McCarty, who graduated after last season, was the men's team's only winner, claiming the long jump. Senior Matt Rudin (Middleburg Heights, Ohio) claimed runner-up in the pole vault with a clearance that moved him into seventh in school history while sophomore Rob Stein (Villa Park, Ill.) took fifth in the discus with a personal-best toss that cracked Miami's top 10.

The sprints/hurdles group led the `Hawks on the women's side at last year's Billy Hayes Invite as junior Layne Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Diona Graves (Fenton, Mo.) each crossed first in the 100m hurdles and 100m dash prelims, respectively, but neither ran in the final. Sophomore Xerina Hughey (Galloway, Ohio) won the 100m hurdles final while moving into Miami's all-time top 10. Junior Katie Scannell (Cortland, Ohio) was third in the 400m hurdles but will not run this Friday due to injury. Baggett, Graves and Scannell also combined to win the 4x100m relay a year ago with Baggett and Graves teaming up again this year.
