The Mid-American Conference announced on Wednesday that senior Brian Godsey (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East), junior Nick Somerville (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) and sophomore David Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) were three of 23 athletes named to the 2003 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Academic All-MAC team, as voted by the faculty athletic representatives at the eleven-member outdoor track institutions.
Godsey became one of five athletes to earn all-MAC distinction along with academic all-MAC acclaim. Godsey set an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:19.33 in the 5,000-meter run at the Miami Invitational. Godsey bettered his NCAA provisional qualifying time at the Penn Relays, finishing the race with a personal best time of 14:02.50, which is fifth on Miami's all-time top-10. Godsey earned his ninth career MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award on March 25. Heading into the MAC Championships, Godsey held the fastest time in the 3,000-meter run and the third fastest time in the 5,000-meter run. Godsey was named second-team all-MAC after his second place finish in the 5,000-meter run at the MAC Championships. Godsey holds a 3.78 with a major in Mathematics and Statistics.
During the season, Somerville took first place in back-to-back meets in the long jump at the Miami Invitational and Southern Ohio Cup after overcoming an early season injury. Somerville produced the conference's best jump of the season and set a school record, notching a 24-11 ? leap at the Southern Ohio Cup as a sophomore. Somerville was sidelined with an injury during the last month of last season, including the conference meet. Somerville won the triple jump at the MAC Outdoor meet as a freshman. Somerville concluded the season with top-15 finishes at the 2003 MAC meet in the long jump and the triple jump. Somerville holds a 3.42 GPA in finance.
In addition to Mitchell's recent honor, he was tabbed MAC Track and Field Athlete of the Week and MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week during the track and field season. Mitchell ran the school's fourth-fastest time in the 5,000-meter run, clocking in at 14:01.20 at the Penn Relays. Mitchell has qualified for the NCAA Regionals in two events; the 1,500-meter run and the 5,000-meter run. At Cincinnati, Mitchell ran the school's third-fastest time in the 1,500-meter run in 3:46.86. Michell was second-team all-MAC and academic all-MAC in cross country earlier this year. Heading into the MAC Championships, Mitchell held the third fastest time in the 3,000-meter run and second fastest time in the 5,000-meter run and the 1,500-meter run. Mitchell holds a 3.55 GPA in English Literature.
