OXFORD, Ohio -- Senior distance runner Pat Sovacool has been named First Team Academic All-District Four by ESPN the Magazine and CoSIDA, highlighting recent academic accomplishments by the Miami men's cross country and track and field program. With his selection to the first team, the Lakewood, Ohio native is now eligible for the Academic All-America ballot.
Sovacool graduated in May with a 3.57 GPA in zoology. In the fall, he will attend dental school at The Ohio State University, where he could run one season of indoor track since the sport is not offered at Miami. Specializing in the 5000, Sovacool was named Division I Male Athlete of the Year by the Ohio Cross Country Coaches Association after placing 12th in the NCAA Great Lakes Cross Country Regional and 65th at the NCAA Championship. He qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track Mideast Regional in the 1500 and 5000 and was just one place shy of advancing to the NCAA National Championships.
Junior Paul Krebs (Kettering), who holds at 3.96 GPA in zoology, was named to the all-district second team . He ran the 3000, 5000 and 10,000 meter distances during track season, ranking fifth in the Mid-American Conference in the 10,000 (30:53.41 at the All-Ohio Championships).
Sovacool and Krebs were also members of the Academic All-MAC team announced this week. They were joined on the 23-man squad by runner Michael Veatch (3.50/Physical Education) and pole vaulter Alex Boiwka (3.79/Zoology).
The league's faculty-athletic representatives voted on the All-MAC team. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
