Dual All-American Dan Huling
June 25, 2006
INDIANAPOLIS - Clocking in with a personal-best time of 8:27.41, Miami University's Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill.) placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2006 AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After finishing fourth in the preliminaries, Huling was one of five runners to complete the race in under 8:30, besting his previous top time of 8:35.16.
On Sunday afternoon at the Michael A. Carrol Track and Field Stadium, Huling finished third behind Daniel Lincoln (8:22.78) and Steve Slattery (8:25.54), both running for Nike. Behind Huling in third place, Jacques Sallberg (8:28.18) and Thomas Brooks (8:28.24) rounded out the top five finishers.
Heading into the national track and field championships, Huling's previous personal-best time in the steeplechase was 8:41.53, a mark Huling eclipsed in both the preliminaries and finals. Huling clocked in at 8:35.16 in the prelims before smashing that mark with his 8:27.41 in the finals.
Prior to the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Huling rewrote the Miami record books in his final season in Oxford, becoming the RedHawks' first dual All-American in cross country and track since Sylvester Stewart in 1944-45. In addition to earning All-America plaudits in the 5,000 meters, Huling won every Mid-American Conference title he competed for, including three conference track titles in the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase.
After winning the MAC Cross Country Title and earning All-America honors during the fall cross country season, Huling also turned in three school record performances between the indoor (mile run, 3,000 meters) and outdoor (3,000-meter steeplechase) track and field seasons.
