West Lafayette, Ind. - Freshman Dan Huling (Geneva, Ill./ Geneva Community) ran down junior Steve Padgett (Cincinnati, Ohio/ LaSalle) to finish third and the RedHawks completed the race with six runners in the top nine finishers on the 6,000-meter course at the Purdue Open.
Huling led the RedHawks with a time of 18:36.7 while Padgett was less than four seconds behind him clocking in at 18:40.1. Junior Jerry Claunch (West Chester, Ohio/ Lakota East), senior Adam Cross (Rochester Hills, Mich./ Rochester Adams), and senior Ryan Clark (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) gave Miami five consecutive finishers. Claunch finished with race in 19:02.4, Cross finished right after him with a time of 19:02.4, and Clark claimed seventh with a time of 19:08.5. Sophomore David Mitchell (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) rounded out the top nine by finishing the course in 19:11.0.
Senior Tim Hufford (West Chester, Ohio/ Lakota East) broke the 20-minute mark with a 14th place finish and a time of 19:49.7. Scott See (Middletown, Ohio/ Middletown) completed the race in the top 20 by crossing the finish line in 20:30.2. Justin Hussel (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Colerain) rounded out the RedHawks by finishing in 26th place with a time of 21:00.8 for the RedHawks.
"This was a real good meet for us overall," said head coach Warren Mandrell. "Dan Huling had an exceptional performance."
Former Purdue runner Donnie Fellows won the race with a leading time of 18:30.6 and Purdue runner Kyle Orender finished second in 18:33.1.
The men's cross country team will run again when it hosts the Miami Invitational next weekend on Saturday, Sept. 7.
