Field Hockey Begins Conference Play

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami field hockey team opens MAC play this weekend. The RedHawks travel to Ohio on Friday for a 3 p.m. contest and then Appalachian State on Sunday for a 12 p.m. game.

Miami is coming off a 0-2 week in which it fell to Ohio State 3-2 and Indiana 3-2 in overtime.

Head Coach Inako Puzo and junior midfielder/forward Paula Portugal spoke with MiamiRedHawks.com about their weekend against Big 10 teams and previewed the start of conference play this weekend. The entire video can be viewed above.

OPPONENT PREVIEW

ABOUT OHIO: The Bobcats are 1-5 this season, after losing to Virginia Commonwealth 3-1 and 2-1 this past weekend. Ohio was 6-11 overall and 3-3 in conference play last season. Junior Kendall Ballard is the Bobcats’ current leading scorer, notching five goals and 11 total points total thus far.

SERIES WITH OHIO: Miami holds a 39-34 lead in the all-time series with Ohio. In 2016, the RedHawks blanked the Bobcats 6-0 in the regular-season finale. Miami held a 21-12 shot advantage in the game. Three RedHawks scored two goals apiece – Paula Portugal, Geagy Pritchard and Carla Romagosa.

ABOUT APPALACHIAN STATE: The Mountaineers are 2-4 this season, after topping Davidson 2-0 and falling to No. 4 North Carolina 6-1 last weekend. Appalachian State held a 1-15 record last season. Sophomore Ali Williams and senior Taylor Cimbalist currently lead the Mountaineers’ scoring efforts with three goals apiece.

SERIES WITH APPALACHIAN STATE: The RedHawks hold a 10-4 lead in the all-time series with Appalachian State. In 2016, Miami dominated with a 6-1 win. Six different players scored for the RedHawks. Miami held a 21-6 shot advantage in the game.

UP AHEAD: The RedHawks host Michigan State on Friday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. Miami then travels to Louisville, Ky. for a neutral site match against Wake Forest on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 2:30 p.m.
