PEORIA, Ill. – The Miami University softball team earned its first victory of the 2018 season against Saint Louis, 3-2, on Sunday at the Bradley Tournament.
Miami 3, Saint Louis 2 – 8 inn.
Shannon Hohman started the game for the RedHawks on the mound and pitched four complete innings. Courtney Vierstra relieved Hohman to start the fifth and finished the game. Hohman recorded five strikeouts and was only charged with one earned run. Vierstra recorded three strikeouts and was charged with no earned runs.
The game was scoreless through two innings before Miami scored a run in the third inning. Mackenzie Moore hit a single to start the third inning and would eventually come home when Kat Lee reached first on a fielding error.
Saint Louis tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo home run – a tie that would force an eighth inning.
In the eighth inning, a runner is placed on second base to begin. Kat Lee, Rylee Whispel and Ashton Slone all hit singles to drive in two runs for Miami. Saint Louis drove in one run but could not match what the RedHawks produced.
Slone led Miami at the plate, going 2-for-4 on the day. Haeley Tran (1-for-3), Lee (1-for-4), Whispel (1-for-3) and Mackenzie Moore (1-for-3) also registered hits for the RedHawks. Slone and Whispel each earned an RBI. Johniann Wahl walked twice and Moore walked once.
The team travels to Orlando, Fla. for the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic from Friday, February 23 through Sunday, February 25.
