CLEVELAND - The Mid-American Conference announced its weekly softball awards on Wednesday. Senior pitcher Jessica Simpson was named MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week for her performance at the Blues City Classic last weekend. It is the first time she has earned the honor this season, and the 11th time she has earned it overall during her remarkable four-year career.
Simpson continued the amazing start to her 2012 season by earning Co-MVP honors (along with fellow pitcher Paige Myers), while leading the team to the championship of the Blues City Classic. She appeared in all five games (three starts), going 2-1 with two saves. She allowed only two runs the entire weekend in 23.1 innings pitched. She also gave up only six hits for an incredible .080 batting average against. Simpson struck out 21 on the weekend and threw two shutouts. Of the 23.1 innings pitched, she allowed runs in only one inning total, shutting out the opposition in 22.1 innings of work. Simpson came in late and earned saves in each of the two games she did not start.
The RedHawks will head to Clearwater, Fla. over spring break to participate in two tournaments. First up is the USF Under Armour Invitational, Mar. 2-4.
