OXFORD, Ohio--Miami's 200th birthday party begins in just 21 days (February 17) and the university's Intercollegiate Athletics Department is inviting nearly 10,000 former men's and women varsity alumni to return to campus to join in on the Bicentennial celebration.
"It is our hope that every past and present student-athlete be on campus to help us commemorate our Bicentennial," said athletic director Brad Bates. "We want everyone to help us celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime occasion."
The athletic department's Bicentennial goals are threefold: 1) engage all Miami student-athlete alumni; 2) celebrate Miami University's athletic history; and 3) engage, excite and energize Miami's fan base.
The first three of 11 different Bicentennial reunions will take place on the Oxford campus during the weekend of April 17 and 18. On that weekend, football, baseball, men's track and field, and men's cross country will all have reunions and home events.
If alumni haven't been involved with the University in recent years, they are directed to register their updated mailing information on-line by going to www.MURedHawks.com. Click on the "Bicentennial Celebration" button on the right side of the page, then click on the sport that relates to them. Hotel reservation information and many other details are available. The athletic department has reserved a limited number of rooms for the returnees on a first-come, first-served basis. Alumni are encouraged to update the athletic department regarding "lost" teammates at 513-529-8097. "Save the Date" postcards will soon be sent to football, baseball, men's track and field, and men's cross country alumni.
Football alumni will be invited to attend a special luncheon and the annual golf outing on Friday, April 17 (11 a.m.) at the Indian Ridge Golf Club. Later that day, at 7 p.m., there will be a social gathering at one of Oxford's uptown establishments. On Saturday morning, the alumni will be invited to attend a pre-game event at Yager Stadium (details TBA), then, at 1 p.m., new head coach Mike Haywood's football squad will make its debut at the annual Spring Game.
Baseball alumni and their families also will have a special weekend, April 17-19, as the RedHawks entertain the University of Buffalo for a three-game Mid-American Conference series. The festivities begin on Friday with a 6 p.m. game at McKie Field at Hayden Park against the Bulls. On Saturday afternoon at 2:30, the alums are invited to a cook-out attended by Coach Dan Simonds and members of his team. Game time that evening is 6 p.m., with attending alumni introduced to the crowd beforehand. After Saturday's game, there will be an informal uptown social. The baseball weekend concludes on Sunday with the Miami-Buffalo game at 1 p.m.
The men's track and field and cross country celebration will be centered around Miami's hosting of the All Ohio Championship on April 17 and 18. First-day competition runs from 2-8 p.m., then Saturday's events start at 10 a.m. Throughout the weekend, there will be an alumni tent with refreshments so that the returnees can socialize. All alums will be issued a field pass so that they can come out onto the track for an up-close-and-personal view. On Saturday at 12:30, Miami's track and cross country alumni will be introduced to the crowd.
The schedule for the remaining Bicentennial sport reunions is as follows:
