BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Miami University women’s tennis team concluded their fall schedule this weekend at the Hokie Fall Invitiational, hosted by Virginia Tech. The RedHawks competed across multiple flights in both doubles and singles throughout the three-day event, which lasted from Nov. 3 to Nov. 5.

Miami was one of ten teams in attendance this weekend, along with the host Hokies Old Dominion, VCU, Liberty, Radford, George Washington, Penn State, James Madison, and Wofford.

Several ‘Hawks put together strong weekends, as the team’s talented core of freshmen continues to string together promising performances. Freshman Priyana Kalita went 2-1 on the weekend. She got started with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Old Dominion’s Rajkovic on Friday, and finished things off with a hard-fought three-set win over Wofford’s Wilbur on Sunday, which placed her in third in the Loyalty Flight.

Fellow first-year player Lena Babunski also finished third in her flight, competing in the Service Flight. She knocked off Radford’s Tyler Blalock 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Friday, and then completed her strong weekend with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Liberty’s Camacho. Nelli Ponomareva and Janelle Ghanem also compiled 2-1 records during the event, with Ponomareva competing in the Brotherhood Flight and Ghanem in the UT Prosim Flight. Ghanem, another freshman, recorded one of the entire event’s most impressive victories when she blanked Hannah Kratky of Penn State 6-0, 6-0.

Miami also found success on the doubles side of the event, especially from the tandem of Kalita and Anastasiia Vasiukhina. The senior/freshman pairing went 3-1, and were able to earn a third-place finish in the 16-team Orange Flight. On the route to this finish they defeated Hanley/Dunn of Penn State and Kozar/Sorkin of Virginia Tech before capping it off with a 6-2 win over Old Dominion’s Olivarez/Vlasova on Sunday. Ponomareva and Babunski also competed in the Orange Flight, where they went 2-1.

This event marks the final tournament for the Red and White. Like all fall events, these results will not affect Miami’s overall record, but do count towards players’ individual rankings. The weekend’s full results can be found below.

The ‘Hawks will return to action after the new year when they head to Boca Raton, Fla. for the FAU Invitational on January 19th. Dual match play will kick off with a match at Kentucky on Jan. 24, with Miami’s first home match coming on Jan. 28 when they take on the Dayton Flyers.
