CLEVELAND - For the second straight week, a member of the Miami University women’s track and field team was recognized by the Mid-American Conference for her efforts the previous week as junior Rachel Patterson earned MAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Patterson (Rochester, Mich.) broke the school record in the 5000m run Friday night at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., clocking a time of 16:14.45, topping her previous best time by nearly 20 seconds while besting Molly Cullen’s school record time of 16:15.97 that had stood since 1992. Patterson’s time is 40 seconds faster than anyone else in the MAC and ranks 27th nationally this year despite running the event for the first time this season. She finished fifth out of 37 runners in her 5K race and fourth among collegiate competitors while running against some of the top athletes in the country.
Last week, junior Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) was named MAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week after also breaking a school record (shot put). She was the first RedHawk to win a MAC weekly honor in track this year. Patterson has been named MAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week three times previously in her career, all last season. She also won MAC Women’s Runner of the Week for cross country three times this past season.
Patterson will be off this weekend but the majority of her teammates will compete at the Jesse Owens Classic April 23-24 in Columbus, Ohio while select RedHawks will travel to Oxford, Miss. for the Mississippi Open April 23.
